Is Casa Pepe Worth The Price? A Nomadic Hostel Review

Although it may not be the most expensive hostel in Mexico City, Casa Pepe is definitely one of the more costly options. Dorms can range anywhere from 20 Euros/~22 USD to about 50 Euros/~55 USD depending on the season, availability, and how many beds are in a room. Private suites can be even pricier, ranging from 100 Euros/~110 USD to 190 Euros/~210 USD. So, seriously not cheap. Therefore, the question must be asked, is Casa Pepe Worth the price?

Let’s jump right into it.

The Good

Casa Pepe has a lot going for it. The first thing of note is that it’s located right in the heart of Mexico City. Therefore, making it the perfect place to stay for easy access to many of the treasures that the city has to offer. However, the good things don’t end there.

The hostel has a myriad of common rooms with a variety of purposes. Ranging from work areas for digital nomads to congregate and get things finished to a rooftop restaurant and bar that overlooks the city. Each area is full of places for people to sit, plug in, relax, have fun, or chat with fellow travellers.

Each dorm is equipped with individual lockers and custom bunk beds designed for privacy. How? Well, each bed has its own light, a place to plug in your devices, a curtain, and the comfiest beds that we have ever experienced in a hostel.

Yet, arguably the best thing that Casa Pepe has to offer is its scheduled events. Almost every day, they have different events that are posted on a calendar. Which can be found in the elevator and other obvious places around the hostel. These events can be a wide array of things as well. For example, a dance class one evening, a scheduled tour to various places, happy hour, and party game evenings. You just have to make sure to sign up for the events that require additional payment.

The Bad

In our experience, there was only one thing we could call bad, but not ugly, about Casa Pepe. Even then, we believe it was situational. They had just updated their check-in system, switching to a self-check-in. It was clearly quite new and was incredibly clunky. It made the check-in process painfully slow.

Hopefully, the kinks have since been figured out. After all, we are fairly certain this was due to the natural growing pains that come with new systems.

The Ugly

There was one day when upon taking a shower we noticed that the drain hadn’t been cleaned and caused the water to pool up to our ankles.

However, upon bringing it to the staff’s attention, it was resolved almost immediately.

Our Review

Upon walking in, Casa Pepe was a sight to behold. You wouldn’t know that it was a hostel. Other than the slow check-in, everything was spectacular. The beds were the lap of luxury, the staff was incredibly professional and attentive, and the food was to die for. Casa Pepe is an oasis for both the traveller and the digital nomad. They boast the hospitality of a homely hostel with the luxury of a boutique hostel, or even a highly-rated hotel.

Every event we participated in was excellently executed and a pure joy to experience. Casa Pepe manages the division of traveller, partier, and working digital nomad with elegance. Something they manage to do while somehow fostering an atmosphere that encourages and fosters interactions and connection between their guests.

It’s a place where people from all walks of life can come together, have great experiences, and walk away with unforgettable memories.

It’s due to these reasons, among many others, that Casa Pepe was one of the recipients of the 2022 Hostel of Choice Award.

Cleanliness: 4.8/5

Other than the pooling water in the shower issue, the place was spotless. Yet no one wants pooling water in a shared shower.

We thought that Hurricane Hostel would be our first 5-star hostel, but alas we are glad to be able to present that to Casa Pepe
