Whenever you travel there is always a need to get around the place you are visiting. Good transportation is always important, but it is even better if it’s fun! So when it comes to fun and cheap ways to get around Croatia here are our favourites.
Rental Cars
Some people just can’t go without having a car. That’s fair and we will do our best not to judge you. Luckily for you, depending on how far ahead you book and how long you book a vehicle for you could get a car for as cheap as 19 Euro (~20 USD) a day.
The average, however, is about 34-57 Euro (~36.50-61 USD) a day. Once again you will need a driver’s license to be able to rent these. We also highly recommend picking up and dropping off the car in the same location as it is usually the cheapest option
ATVs (Quads)
Although definitely not the cheapest option to get around Croatia, off-roading with an ATV is one of the most fun methods available. Most places won’t rent ATVs outside of certain tours, but you can find some that will. However, the prices of individual rentals tend to be a ton more expensive than the tours. Like ~120 Euro for 2 hours compared to ~40 Euro for 2 hours
Scooters
The distinction between this one and the next was confusing to me at first. By scooters Croatians normally mean something like mopeds, Vespas, etc. Not the razor scooters you see in the skateparks in the states these days.
Obviously to rent one of these guys you will need a driver’s license. However, they tend to be incredibly well priced ranging from about 30-53 Euros (~32-57 USD). The only kicker is that there is usually a minimum day requirement for rentals.
E-Scooters
Now, this guy is the scooter I had imagined. Basically a razor scooter with an engine that goes way faster than it has any right to. An adventure with one of these guys will be either thrilling or terrifying depending on you.
Not one of the cheaper options, but a wild fun time these boys are better for short-term rental. Averaging around 10 Euros/USD an hour or 60 Euro (~65 USD) for 24 hours these rockets are perfect for zooming around cities and towns. Cheaper than Vienna though.
Bikes
Although I am not personally a bike person I acknowledge that more and more people are becoming bike people. Luckily, Croatia is very bike-friendly and rentals are pretty cheap. Bike rentals usually start around 13 Euros (~14 USD) per day with deals available if you rent for multiple days making bike rentals one of the best cheap ways to get around Croatia.
Electric Bikes
Electric bikes, or E-bikes, are much more my style. Especially in hillier areas as my knees tend to take a beating. Not to mention with the power of E-bikes you can rip around pretty easily and at awesome speeds. Nothing quite like soaring down the road, wind whipping your hair back so you look majestic as fuck, all in a gorgeous country. All of this can be yours for only 35 Euro (~37.50 USD) a day. Which is a pretty good price for such an awesome way to get around.
Speedboats
Speedboats are one of the more expensive of the cheap ways to get around Croatia. They also tend to be more specific to coastal areas. With Croatia boasting over 1,000 islands and over 5,000 kilometres of coast, motorboats are more than viable when it comes to transportation.
In fact, many islands have what they call a “speedboat taxi”, which is really just a speedboat that stops in specific places on an island or set of islands. Prices can vary based on distance. Local routes, such as the taxi in Korcula are (at most) 300 Kuna (~40 Euro/43 USD) for a day pass. Whereas longer treks can be pretty pricey. Speedboats from Split airport to Hvar tend to start at around 2600 Kuna (350 Euro/ 370 USD)
If you prefer, you can also rent different types of boats per day. Depending on the type of boat prices can vary significantly. You can find boats starting at around 78 Euro (84 USD) a day all the way up to yachts costing 5,000 Euro (5360 USD) or more a day. All from independent owners who offer the option of having a captain come with you.
If you don’t want to rent from independent owners you can always rent from a rental company, but if you do you should expect to pay a bit more.
Catamarans and Ferries
The catamarans and ferries are one of the best ways to get around along the coast. They are also the best and cheapest way to get around the islands. The catamaran is more expensive than the ferry but is a lot faster.
Costs tend to vary depending on the distance and if it is the on- or off-season. With the Catamaran from Split to Korcula, you are looking at about 150 Kuna (~20 Euro/ 21.50 USD). Whereas the same trip on the ferry is about 64 Kuna (~8.50 Euro/ 9USD) during the tourist season. Easily one of the best cheap ways to get around Croatia.
Buses
The bus system in Croatia is pretty top-notch and not enough tourists or travellers utilize it. Buses around towns and cities cost next to nothing. I mean like literally pennies to a dollar.
Buses to towns in the local area tend to range from 1 Euro (~1 USD) to around 20 Euro (~21.5 USD) depending on the distance.
If you are wanting to go clear across the country then your bus ticket price will probably top out at around 40 Euro (~43 USD). Hell, Some tickets to towns in other countries are even cheaper than that. Utilize it!
Uber
Uber is amazingly cheap in Croatia. Like stupid cheap. I’ve seen rides that might cost you 30+ dollars in the US be as low as 50-60 kuna (~6-8 Euro/USD)
With Uber being this cheap there is almost never an excuse to use a taxi. Especially since they will try to charge you way more than they should. You should always save money on transportation and places to stay.
Hitchhiking
When it comes to fun and cheap ways to get around Croatia I personally advocate for the age-old classic hitchhiking. Croatia is ranked 17th on the global peace index for safest countries in the world, but even if it wasn’t that high hitchhiking is fun.
You get to meet new people that you never would have otherwise. Get tips on things to do and see in the area. Best of all it’s free! I have hitchhiked in Croatia more times than I can count and every experience was really cool. If it’s something you have never done or never considered doing Croatia is a good place to give it a shot.
In Conclusion:
There are a lot of cheap and fun ways to get around Croatia. Some are more fun than cheap, others more cheap than fun. Whichever way you lean more towards here are 11 of our favourites.
