So last week when doing our year in review I shortly mentioned our plans for the upcoming year. Originally I had planned on expanding on using this week to expand on all of our various travel plans as well as add a few that we had been hoping for, but were very unlikely. Then last night I received news that one of my major trip plans has either been delayed or cancelled entirely. So I decided instead to share how our travel plans changed and how travel plans have a tendency to change in general.
How Our Travel Plans Changed
As I stated last week, I was planning on going on a few week-long road trips across Italy with some family members. Starting in Rome, going down to the Amalfi Coast, Bari, and a few other places before making our way back to Vienna. This was supposed to happen in late spring.
Well, things have since changed and it looks like we will either be postponed for much later in the year, late fall or early winter, another year, or just straight cancelled. I was really looking forward to experiencing Italy in this way so I am super disappointed about it.
Turns out that my Uncle, Aunt, and perhaps my cousins will be headed to Croatia in May so I might go see them while they are down there. It’ll be good to see family after not being back in North America in a few years.
How Travel Plans Change All the Time
After some time thinking about how my plans have already changed so far this year, I realized I can’t really be disappointed. With the times that we are currently living in making plans to travel is pretty difficult as it is, but even before the pandemic travelling was fickle and unpredictable.
There are so many unpredictable things that can occur when travelling and I’ve always encouraged people to embrace that unpredictability. After all, I would never have found Hurricane Hostel in Split if I didn’t accept an invitation by someone else visiting Dragan’s Den in Korcula. Speaking of which I never would have been at Dragan’s Den if my plans to stay in Makarska hadn’t changed. Yet I embraced those changes and had a crazy time.
Yet not all unpredictability is good. Weather can change the plans for a portion of a trip or cancel it entirely. I real good mugging or theft can put a real damper on your plans. Not to mention all of the possible scams you could fall for. Yet for most, you can make the most of a bad situation.
If you embrace the unpredictability and changes that occur you can have an incredible experience that you never would’ve expected or could have even planned.
One of my favourite pieces of advice is to (almost) always say yes when fellow travellers or fellow hostel stayers invite you on adventures. I encourage you to do so as well.
So regardless of the changes I still look forward to the things we’ll be doing this year. Hopefully, nothing else changes, but I’m ready to embrace the unpredictability and changes that are coming our way.
Until next time travel authentically, travel nomadically, and let the world leave its inscriptions on you as you do on it.
