Nomadic Inscriptions Restaurant and Bar Rating System

Everyone loves to go out with their loved ones to a nice restaurant or bar. It’s a huge letdown when that place is… less than perfect. My wife and I just went to two dim sum restaurants for our anniversary. The first had a really nice atmosphere, but horrible food and a disappointing variety in selection. The second had great food and a huge selection, but a horrible atmosphere. Overall both were very disappointing. To hopefully keep others from the same experience we have come up with this restaurant and bar rating system.

This restaurant and bar rating system consists of 5 categories with an overall rating. Each category will be rated out of five stars. We want to take the time to go over some of the aspects we consider important in a dining experience. We hope to keep you from some of the worst experiences we’ve had.

Without further ado, here are the categories for our restaurant and bar rating system.

Variety of Food Selection:

When we talk about the variety of food selection we aren’t talking about different types of food. I’m not wanting to go to an Italian restaurant to get Indian food. I want my Italian. Yet, if you give me a bunch of different options from various regions of Italy I am a very happy man.

I don’t like going into a restaurant and seeing the same three options every other place in a 50-kilometre area does. I want a variety in the beverages and meals a place offers, don’t you?

Professionalism and Friendliness of Staff:

We all want a great experience when we go out. Part of that experience is the people you meet and when those people are less than friendly it can really put a damper on an otherwise great evening.

Atmosphere:

The right lighting, mood music, table setting, and layout are just some of the things that make up the atmosphere of a place. Whether you are talking about restaurants and bars, hotels and hostels, or tattoo studios a good atmosphere is an important part of an amazing establishment.

Some people even go as far as to say the atmosphere is the most important aspect of a place.

Taste of Food and Drink:

I don’t know about you, but when we go out for dinner and drinks it’s usually because we want to taste something great. For the longest time, my wife and I would primarily go to places recommended by friends and family. Now we try a variety of places to find what tastes good and what doesn’t. That way you don’t have to.

The taste can make or break an outing. The last thing you want is a bad aftertaste left in your mouth. Especially if that aftertaste lasts for hours. Trust me, it’s not a good time.

Cleanliness:

It is our opinion that cleanliness is one of the most important things if not the most important thing when it comes to places to eat and drink. After all, if what you can see isn’t clean then just how bad might what you can’t see be?

Granted there are different expectations when it comes to different places to eat and drink. Street food, for example, will have a very different expectation level then fine dining. Same with a dive bar compared to an experimental cocktail club. We realise and acknowledge these things and will keep them in mind when giving our rating.

Overall Rating:

Most of the sections correspond with a single star. A 0-1.5 in a section will equate to no star here, a 2-3.5 will be half a star, and a 4-5 will be a full star.

The only exception to this is Cleanliness. Getting a 0-1 in this section will result in a star being removed instead of just not getting one.

This restaurant and bar rating system is tied to another award that we have planned here at Nomadic Inscriptions. Later this year we will be announcing all the award categories. Look forward to seeing some of those awards given out in early 2022.
