Best Cheap Places to Eat in Split, Croatia

There are a lot of great places to eat in Split. Yet most of them can be very expensive, getting all the way up to 500 kuna (~67 Euro/USD) or more just for one person’s meals. It can be crazy, and sometimes you just want something quick, easy, and cheap. Sure, there are the kebab places and cheap little to-go places on the side of the street that aren’t that good. Yet most people regret that as they don’t usually taste too good or, god forbid, food poisoning sets in. To avoid that when your stomach stops growling, here are the best cheap places to eat in Split.

7. Alpha Pizza

At only a 5-minute walk from the palace, Alpha’s location in the same square as the nightclub Quasimodo allows for a brief respite from the hustle and bustle of the palace and old town. Yet, is it worth going out of your way to eat there? Absolutely. Alpha Pizza has some of the best pizzas in all of Split.

Being locally owned by Dennis and his partner allows for local ingredients to be used in every pizza. Ranging from the classics like Hawaiian and Salami to their house pizza the Alpha, every bite is mouth-watering and satisfying simultaneously. That’s without even mentioning their crêpes. You won’t regret trying Alpha Pizza, as they are surely one of the best cheap places to eat in Split.

6. Brooklyn Bagel Co.

Bagels probably aren’t what you would expect when thinking about the best cheap places to eat in Split. Yet, Brooklyn Bagel Co. will surprise you. One of the two owners came from New York and brought with him the recipes for most of the sandwiches as well as the cookies.

Not only are all the variations of bagel and sandwich combos delicious, but they will also fill you up. With how quick, easy, delicious, and cheap Brooklyn Bagel Co. is, it definitely earns its place among the best cheap places to eat in Split.

5. Sanctuary

Not only is Sanctuary one of the best bars in Split, but it also has some pretty good food. Owned by another American and labelling itself as a Mexican Cantina, Sanctuary specializes in Mexican cuisine.

Paired with the fact that Sanctuary is one of the best bars in Split their food makes them a double threat. Between their delicious food and their amazing cocktails, an evening here is assured to be a good time. After all, it has the tendency to bring in the expats and even some locals.

4. Gelateria Emiliana

While not exactly a meal, Gelateria Emiliana is still one of the best cheap places to eat in Split. That is primarily due to the fact that they have the best ice cream in all of Split.

It’s so good in fact that you can find a lineup going all the way down the street several times a day. Emiliana isn’t just ice cream, it’s a thick Italian-style gelato that just explodes on the taste buds. With a wide variety of flavours, Emiliana is one of the best cheap places to eat in Split.

3. Bakeries

Bakeries are an underrated gem. North Americans just don’t have the appreciation for them that Europeans do. Luckily, in Split, there are quite a few. Not only that, but a few of them are open 24 hours a day! Making the bakery a great stop after a long night of partying or an early morning breakfast. There is never a bad time to stop at a bakery.

2. Funky George

Funky George the first of our 2021 Restaurant of Choice winners. A man in red sits in front of the Funky George bar. The Funky george logo sits across the top.

As one of the Nomadic Inscriptions 2021 Restaurant/Bar of Choice Award winners, Funky George maintains its place as one of the best cheap places to eat in Split. As had been said before, the food is absolutely delicious sober, but it gets even better the more you drink. This is a built-in godsend as Funky George is also one of the best bars in Split. Drink the evening away with some newly made friends then grab a bite to eat at the window around the corner before going back to drinking. What could be better?

Although since 2021 they have done away with the Chicken George (sad face) they still have the George which is scrumptious. There is even a Veggie George for the vegetarians out there. If you don’t like sandwiches, then try out their wings, fries, or shakes. You really can’t go wrong with Funky George.

1. Casa De Fuego

Casa De Fuego is a newly opened Mexican place across the park from the palace, and it is Fuego. Not only does it live up to its name in the range of spiciness you can get, but it also lives up to it in the way the food tastes. It is fire!

Each bite just melts in your mouth as the flavours explode on your tongue. They pride themselves on being authentic to the point of importing Jarritos, a classic Mexican soft drink, from Mexico. They are absolutely one of the best cheap places to eat in Split.
