After 2020 and 2021 were rough years for travel, we were finally able to really travel this last year and visit many of the restaurants recommended by readers. Those recommendations have led to finding some phenomenal hole-in-the-walls we may never have found otherwise. After all, finding the best cheap and delicious food around the world can be frustratingly difficult. The 2022 Restaurant of Choice Awards highlights the best of those, so that you may easily find them.
Osteria A Piedi Pari – Rome, Italy
At the time of writing this, it’s been about a year since we tried the food at Osteria A Piedi Pari. Yet, Lisa is still raving about how their carbonara is the best she has ever had.
She may even go as far as to say it’s the best meal she has ever had. A spectacular amount of praise from someone who lives for food. There was little debate before the decision was made to name Osteria A Piedi Pari as one of the 2022 Restaurant of Choice Award winners.
Gladius – Bratislava, Slovenia
Gladius contributed to the most amazing experience in Bratislava. After a day of exploring the city, we had dinner there to get a taste of some of the local cuisine.
Although the food was incredible, yet the food alone didn’t secure their spot among the 2022 Restaurant of Choice Award winners. The food perfectly matched the warm and welcoming atmosphere that the owners cultivate. They created a place that felt less like a restaurant and more like a home.
Casa de Fuego – Split, Croatia
Casa de Fuego was a bit of a surprise for us. Who would have thought that there would be such great Mexican food in Croatia?
Although considered “fast food”, Casa de Fuego is so much more than that. The owner is incredibly hands-on, visiting Mexico and importing authentic drinks and supplies to keep things as authentic as possible. After our trip to Mexico, we would have to say he does a fantastic job.
La Terraza – Mexico City, Mexico
We thought we knew what a good Taco is. We were wrong. Until you have a taco from La Terraza your taste buds have not experienced what a taco really is.
That doesn’t just come from us, either. During one of our meals at this little hole in the wall, we had the chance to have a long conversation with a local over some great food. He let us know that even after moving to the complete opposite side of Mexico City, he still goes out of his way at least once a week to eat here.
We are tempted to go back just to eat here again. The soft corn shells made right in front of you, the homemade sauces, the party all day and all night. The only downside to La Terraza is that it’s located in a slightly sketchy part of town. That being said, we felt perfectly safe there. Both in the middle of the day and past 1 am.
This is the type of recommendation that we long for and are elated to be able to give the 2022 Restaurant of Choice Award.
Villa Spiza – Split, Croatia
If you ever end up in Split, even for only a few hours, then you must eat at Villa Spiza. The menu changes daily based on what fresh seafood they can get from the local market. Once they are out, that option gets crossed off the handwritten menu.
We couldn’t stop returning to Villa Spiza and that’s not just due to having had one of the worst meals we ever experienced earlier that trip.
Villa Spiza is the number one recommendation we got for places we should eat in Split. One meal there and it was clear why. The food alone is phenomenal, but its location in the palace adds a breath of history we’ve experienced in very few other places.
Honestly, when it comes to Villa Spiza it’s hard to explain why it’s a must. You just have to try it to see why they deserve one of the 2022 Restaurant of Choice Awards.
Take It To Go
Another year of great meals, hidden gems, interesting recommendations, and more than one night of food poisoning has come and gone. It’s been an incredible year filled with unforgettable experiences and we are honoured to be able to give these places the 2022 Restaurant of Choice Awards.
Upon making our decisions, we take your future experiences and meals quite seriously. If you have a place you would like us to check out, then send that information to team@nomadicinscriptions.com. We have someone working to compile and organize all recommendations based on location.
With that, this week’s awards have come to an end. However, next week we will be announcing the 2022 Tattoo Studio of Choice and Nomadic Inscriber of Choice Awards. Hopefully, you didn’t miss this year’s Hostel of Choice Award.
So until next week, stay authentic, stay Nomadic, and let the world inscribe itself upon you more than you inscribe yourself upon it.
