2021 was a really rough year for travelling. Noone on the Nomadic Inscriptions team had the chance to travel as much as usual. Much less as much as we wanted to. This has led to us hitting far fewer places to stay than is normal. This means that the list of 2021 Hostel of Choice winners is even shorter.
We vet numerous hostels and other places to stay before deciding on a few of our choice to give this award. Of those places to stay we vetted this year, only these three made the cut for the award.
Yet these three deserve to be the Nomadic Inscriptions 2021 Hostel of Choice winners.
Hurricane Hostel
Split, Croatia
We don’t know what to say about Hurricane Hostel that we haven’t already said.
Hurricane Hostel was a real surprise to us. It wasn’t even on our radar until a group staying there did an overnight trip where we were staying. They convinced us to come back with them and we are glad we did. For we found a gem that we feel outshines all the other hostels in Split. The minor problems that we pointed out in our review of Hurricane have since been solved. Showing that the management is not only open to constructive criticism, but also on top of solving the issues pointed out to them. Which just adds to all the positives we found with this place while we were there.
With that being said we are excited to announce Hurricane Hostel as our first-ever Hostel of Choice Award winner.
Dragan’s Den
Korcula, Croatia
Although Dragan’s Den didn’t achieve a very high technical score we still felt it deserved this award. The atmosphere that Dragan fosters at his hostel encourages socialization between guests. So despite Dragan’s Den’s technical flaws, it is exemplary of its niche. A homely hostel that focuses on socialization and connections between people. We also believe after the candid conversation we had with management most of the problems we pointed out that can be resolved will be if they haven’t already.
In addition to this, we also picked Dragan’s Den to receive this award because if anyone were to ask where to stay in Korcula this would be the place we would recommend. Dragan’s Den’s location on Korcula allows it to be an amazing launching point for island hopping. A great thing to do in Croatia which has over 1000 islands.
Dragan’s Den has eked its way into the list of the first 2021 Hostel of Choice Winners.
Luxurious Apartments Marina
Makarska, Croatia
We don’t normally stay in apartments as they tend to be a lot more expensive than hostels. Yet when going to Makarska it’s almost the only option. Throughout the town, there are dozens of apartments, a handful of hotels, and only one hostel since Hostel Mimika closed down. Not to mention that with that one hostel, there never seems to be a dorm room available. Only private rooms.
When we found out that the old owner and host of Hostel Mimika also managed a set of apartments we were there. As a host alone, Josip could earn his place this award. He is constantly going above and beyond for the people that stay with him. Yet he isn’t the only good thing about these apartments.
Luxurious Apartments Marina is only about a two-minute walk to the beach and boardwalk. Depending on which apartment you rent you’ll either have a stunning view of the mountain range or a breathtaking view of the Adriatic. Either way, you’ll be happy. Plus with the number of people you can fit in each apartment, the price is almost always better than even the hostel in town.
All of these things, plus a couple of extra pleasant surprises, are the reason that the Hostel of Choice Award got expanded to fit any type of accommodation. We are honoured to be able to have Luxurious Apartments Marina on this list of the 2021 Hostel of Choice winners as our first Apartments of Choice.
Final Words
As of now, the 2021 Hostel of Choice winners have been contacted with congratulations and inquiries on how to get their rewards to them. Thus Bringing our first Hostel of Choice award to an end.
We had a great time at all of the different hostels we stayed at in 2021 and are stoked to stay at even more in 2022. Thank you for all the great experiences.
Tomorrow we will be announcing the 2021 Restaurant of Choice Award winners. Spoiler alert! We had the chance to try a lot more restaurants than hostels this year.
Stay authentic. Stay nomadic. Let the world inscribe itself on you as you inscribe yourself on it. We’ll see you next year!.
