A few weeks ago, we talked about how to find cheap and delicious food while on the road. That guide goes through methods that work in every country around the world. However, there is one method that we excluded due to the fact that, at least for now, it is specific to certain countries. That method is the app Too Good To Go.
What is Too Good To Go?
Too Good To Go is a food app that is available in a select amount of countries. Now, one might hear that and think, “Oh, so like Uber eats or Skip the Dishes.” Well, they would be wrong.
Too Good To Go’s slogan/tagline is “End Food Waste”. Although the idea itself is honourable, how is a company that is peddling food supposed to end food waste if they are peddling food? It’s kind of an oxymoron.
Well, this is where it gets cool. Like ranking above Earth Day cool. Too Good To Go partners with various businesses to sell the food they have left over at the end of their day, so it gets sold instead of being thrown out.
Why It’s So Great
It could be understandable if someone were to ask something along the lines of, “If the company couldn’t sell their food in the first place, how is an app going to help them?”
Well, here’s the thing. All the food on Too Good To Go is sold at a highly, highly discounted rate. For example, a local Chinese buffet had an offer of €3.99 per person, and you could bring your own box.
So a giant box of Chinese food that would normally cost over 15 euros easily. It’s insane. The prices are absolutely incredible for the amount of food you get. That being said, there are a couple of annoying things about the app.
The Downsides Of Too Good To Go
There are really only three downsides to the app.
The first is that there is a window of time given for each store and restaurant presented on the app. If you can’t make that time, then you are S.o.L. Sometimes it’s hours, sometimes it’s 15 minutes.
The second is that it’s pickup only. They confirm through the app that you’ve ordered and will either let you pick a bunch of stuff or just give you a bunch of stuff. So you have to be at the location within a specific time frame.
The third and final downside. Each place only has a limited amount of offers they can give. After all, they are trying to get rid of all the stuff they haven’t sold, not make new stuff. Yet, this means that if you find an amazing offer like 10 € for 9 Knödel (usually 3-5 € each) you need to jump on it before they run out.
So What Countries Have Too Good To Go?
According to them, there are only around 17 countries that currently have the Too Good To Go app.
The company originated in Denmark in 2015, but quickly expanded into Germany, The Netherlands, Austria, Poland, France, Norway, Sweden, Belgium, Italy, Switzerland, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Spain, and Portugal.
Then in October 2020, they expanded to the United States, where they’ve been booming. In 2021, they made it to Canada. Every year they continue to expand and it’s incredible. Yet there’s still only a limited number of countries that the app is in.
Takeaway
Hopefully, this will encourage people to get some great takeaway for really cheap. Maybe this will help people in America not get fired for giving away the food they were supposed to throw out to homeless people. Who knows?
Although it’s a great option for really cheap food, it also feels like a huge step in the right direction when it comes to the sheer amount of food wasted every day. Two for one.
So check out if it’s available near you next time you travel, or even now while you’re home. It might just change the way you order food. Let us know about your experiences with the app down below.
Until next time, stay authentic, Stay Nomadic, and let the world inscribe itself upon you more than you inscribe yourself upon it.
